Product Description
Add enhanced automation to your Caseta dimmers, switches, and fan controls with your Caseta Motion Sensor. Program your Caseta Motion Sensor as an occupancy or vacancy sensor to automatically control any number of Caseta devices when you enter or leave a room. One motion sensor can control many Caseta devices within up to 60 ft. and can detect motion three times better than other comparative sensors. The motion sensor features a full 180В° field of view, in addition to having a typical 10 year battery life, three times longer than the industry average. Use the motion sensor for occupancy or vacancy applications wherever it's needed - no wires required. Place it freestanding on a flat surface or mount to a wall or corner; this makes the motion sensor perfect for bathrooms, laundry rooms, hallways, garages, and more. Place in a high traffic area of your home for hands-free control of your lights; alternatively, place in a low traffic area of your home so you never have to remember if you turned the lights off. Set your desired light level on each device controlled by your sensor for further customization; when the sensor switches on, it will automatically turn your devices on to the preset level.

The installation was a breeze. Adding the Motion Sensor was just as easy as adding any of the other Lutron Caseta devices that I have. What I noticed is that on the back of the Occupancy Sensor unit are a number of LED's and buttons for various modes. How these are set/changed, I did not see any directions on the included paper instructions. The instruction on how to program these settings are found in the Lutron app under the "Edit Device" -> "Sensor Settings Instructions" that is listed at the bottom once I've selected the Occupancy Sensor icon. It seems that since the default settings are most commonly used, Lutron did not include the directions on the paper copy.
After placing this in my backyard, moving around in its field of view would turn on my lights. Since I set my Timeout value to 5 minutes, the lights would turn off after 5 minutes.
It was easy to install and works great!
Here are some things that I wish I was able to do with the Occupancy Sensor.
1. Place in a wet (outdoor) location. (i.e. Have an IP65 (or greater) rating)
The Occupancy Sensor does not appear to be water resistant. There are many holes in the back of the case (LED lights, buttons, and (what looks to be) test points). Having some way to make this IP65 would be nice; especially since I currently have this mounted outdoors. Even an IP65 case that I could place this unit into would be nice.
2. Be able to disable the Occupancy Sensor based on a scheduled time.
When I came out in the morning (when the sun was out) and walked into the field of view of the Occupancy Sensor, the lights came on. I'm guessing that since there is no light sensor, the Occupancy Sensor is always active. It would be great if I could set a schedule for the Occupancy Sensor to be (for example) active at sunset and in-active at sunrise
I'm a Homekit user. When I built my system up from the ashes of a prior ZWave setup, I made a big decision: anywhere I had a lamp, I'd use a Hue bulb. Anywhere I had a switch, I would use a Lutron Caseta switch. I don't have any need/desire for color in my lights, so this worked perfectly for me. My primary goal was to automate every single light in my house and do it as cheaply as possible.
It's been 3 years now and there's one thing I'm certain of: Caseta products are the best home automation products ever made. I have NOT ONCE had a problem with my Caseta products, and the Hue stuff gives me constant headaches.
The only motion sensors I have in my house are in my laundry room and hall closet. They're Hue sensors controlling Hue bulbs in the Hue app (Homekit is completely incapable of programming occupancy correctly - the biggest oversight in a platform full of problems). As I mentioned, I have frequent problems with all the Hue products, so I was THRILLED when Lutron announced their Caseta motion sensor. I think I literally jumped up and down, I was so excited. Imagine my disappointment when I checked out the reviews on Amazon and Reddit! Everyone hated it! I couldn't believe it!
But, as I mentioned, I consider Caseta products to be the best ever, so I took a chance on the sensor...and I'm glad I did.
Look, I'm using this thing in a room where I actually don't want to use a light switch. I'm using it in my garage workshop, and I've had it installed and operating for 2 weeks now. I can tell you that in my setup it has been nothing short of flawless.
It takes less than a second for the lights to turn on when I enter the room. Less than if I'd used a switch. I have the sensor set to pick up minor movement and I have it set for a 5 minute timer. I have not ONCE had the lights turn out on me while I was in my garage. And that's pretty important when I'm using a freaking table saw. Even when I'm on the opposite side of the room standing very still in front of my wall-mounted computer, the sensor is able to pick up enough motion to keep the lights on. The entire time I've been writing this review, I've been standing 15-18 feet from the sensor with my back turned to it, and my slight movements have been enough for it to catch.
On the flip side, I know that the five minute time-out is working perfectly. See, we have a fridge and freezer in our garage, so we regularly come out here to get something. I've had plenty of times where I've come back to the garage anywhere from 7-15 minutes later and the lights were off like they should be.
Again, I'm not doubting the people who don't like this sensor. I'm assuming that if I walked into the room, the lights went on, then I walked out of the room and turned them off from a switch and then walked back in a minute later, the sensor wouldn't turn the lights on. I can see that complaint and I think it's reasonable. I just wanted to offer this counterpoint to argue that in my situation it's far and away the best possible option.
SUMMARY: If you have a place in your home or business that you only want controlled by motion and not switches, this is the sensor for you.
Great quality, works exactly as described.
Original review: Sooo disappointed. Sure, they are giant sensors which is sad. 2nd, they automatically run the lights in the room you attach them to. If you want to control different lights with different sensors, they need to be set up in different "rooms". 3rd, they are not very smart. You are adjusting the sensor hardware to decide how it acts, With only a few settings. If you want to have it turn on automatically, but not turn off for any extended
time, like in a large room that you work or hang out, sorry, this is not an option. Im already $2k invested and considering throwing it all away and using kasa that i used before , with more smart choices and less cost

The Caseta devices are a joy to have due to their functionality and reliability. Included is the mounting hardware and it is a rather straightforward installation.
Do keep on hand some CA123A batteries for replacement in case one fails.
Highly recommend Caseta products by Lutron.
