Customer Review: A must for container gardening!
Vince
From the manufacturer
What Can You Grow in A Smart Pot?
The short answer: anything with roots. .. But start with something good to eat!
You can grow almost anything in a Smart Pot: vegetables, herbs, flowers, and more.
You don't need a green thumb to have a thriving container garden. All you need are the right tools. Your #1 tool is the Smart Pot.
Smart Pots Soft-sided Container
Better than traditional plastic containers
Smart Pots utilize a patented fabric design to produce a healthier plant. Before Smart Pots became a household name, professional tree growers were using it for over 25 years and found their trees grew better in our fabric containers.
Almost all plants grow better in Smart Pot fabric containers. That’s because Smart Pots support healthy root growth. And strong roots means a stronger plant.
Compared to plastic containers, Smart Pots stay cooler on hot days because it allows air to flow through the sides of the fabric. Roots can’t grow and are stressed when plastic containers get hot.
Smart Pots also root-prunes. What is root pruning? When a root tip reaches the side of our fabric container, it stops in place, and initiates lateral, or side branching. As this process repeats, the entire area of the container is filled with fibrous root growth, allowing more surface area for mineral and water absorption. A recent study at Texas A&M University showed double the root mass compared to a traditional plastic container. In a plastic container, roots circle around the side and rarely initiate fibrous growth.
About Smart Pots
Nurserymen and Master Gardeners alike have known for over thirty years that Smart Pots grow better plants because of the fabric used in their construction.
The tough, long lasting Smart Pot material has just the right amount of porosity to promote air root pruning, excellent drainage and allow excess heat to escape, producing superior plants. The patented soft-sided containers last for years, even in the harshest winters, and are excellent for growing the widest variety of container or potted plants.
A healthy, well-established root system is key to overall growth, and Smart Pots provide roots with an ideal environment, allowing them to thrive and develop to their full potential. Vegetables, flowers, herbs and fruits all do well in Smart Pots. Smart Pots are the horticulturist's first choice for container gardening!
Smart Pots are 100% made in the USA. All of our raw materials and manufacturing processes are sourced in the USA. Our fabric is totally inert and free of chemicals and BPA’s.
Air Pruning in Smart Pots
As roots grow in containers they eventually reach the container walls. In hard-sided containers, these roots, upon reaching the walls, start circling and continue to circle, seeking a friendlier environment. Upon examination, these root systems exhibit a few strong roots growing in circles with very little branching, often are bound or girdled upon themselves and, depending on the type of plant, can produce a strong tap root growing through the containers bottom.
These characteristics can hinder the plant's rate of growth and in some cases its chances of survival when transplanted. Roots grown in a Smart Pot come in contact with the fuzzy, fabric inner wall of the bag and penetrate or grow into the fabric. The bag's tough fabric prevents the root's continued longitudinal growth, in effect pruning it, causing the root to develop masses of lateral fibrous roots. Upon comparison, root systems that developed in a Smart Pot have a much greater mass or volume then those found in hard-sided containers.
Plants grown in Smart Pots have root balls that contain many more roots than found in a hard-sided container of similar size. The fibrous root systems produced in Smart Pots are more efficient and enable plants to maximize water and nutrient uptake in the limited surrounding soil mass.
Controlling Plant Temperature Using Smart Pots
The Smart Pot’s black fabric quickly warms up early season soil, enabling plants to get off to a quicker start. Yet the same fabric, due to its porous nature, allows heat to escape from the container through evaporative cooling during the summer's hottest days.
Even in northern climates, root systems of container-grown plants can be damaged from too much heat. University studies have also shown a direct relationship between soil temperature and slow-release fertilizer activity. Cooler containers do not allow for premature fertilizer release.
Indoor Gardening
Gardening indoors can be as fun and rewarding as gardening outside. It can also be less of a headache! When you garden inside you bring everything to your plant: light, water, and food. Using a hydroponic system is one of the best methods to do this.
When you garden using hydroponics you control everything. Your system delivers everything your plant needs so all your plants have to do is grow. When you’re indoors you’re in charge.
The hydroponic industry for a long time has done a great job in providing the hydroponic hobbyist a nice selection of good quality lighting, nutrients, additives, pH testers and balancers. But it has had a limited selection of containers. This meant that the gardener was forced to place their plant in a system that provides the best light, the best food, and an environment for optimal performance. However the container they had available for use was limited.
Not anymore. The Smart Pot is the perfect complement to any hydroponic enthusiast’s system. The Smart Pot provides an environment for the root system to allow it to do what the lights and nutrients are asking it to do. Most other containers don’t do this. The fact is the Smart Pot is the best container for gardening in a hydroponic system. Here’s why:
The Smart Pot is made of a porous fabric which allows water to flow freely while keeping medium inside – no more clogged hoses.
The Smart Pot air prunes the roots which creates more roots through branching; more roots means more root tips and more opportunity for the plant to feed.
The Smart Pot stimulates beneficial bacteria because of the aeration – beneficials need oxygen.
The Smart Pot allows the plant to use all the space inside the container for root growth, thereby letting the plant grow bigger than traditional hydroponic containers allow.
The Smart Pot doesn’t allow roots to circle, making it the ideal container for a mother plant.
The Smart Pot releases heat, keeping the plant free from stress.
Give your plants what they want: room to grow, air to breathe, and an environment to thrive. Give your plants the Smart Pot!

Product Description
The Smart Pot® is a soft-sided aeration container that air root prunes your plants. Air root pruning is a key component to a healthy fibrous root ball. Unlike plastic containers, roots do not circle. Instead, air root pruning creates a more fibrous root structure with more root tips. More roots means quicker growth. No circling roots mean better growth.

The only thing I wish is that I switched a long time ago. I'll never grow in regular pots again. It's like having an air stone system in soil. That's the best I can describe it. I haven't tried a regular soil grow in these, I'm using soilless pro-mix, but I would still back these up in a heartbeat. I combined two of these with a scrog system, a 1000 watt hid, and a basic nute routine. Flowers occurred sooner, were two to three times the size I was used too, and stacked. I used a third gen clone, so I had a good basis for comparison.
Since the lumens in a room are finite, you have a limit on yield. If you're struggling to get everything you can out of your light's output, this is a step in the right direction. You will not be disappointed, or regret this purchase. They're well made, and heavy duty. Mine are 15 gallon, that's what I'm reviewing. I would assume construction quality of different sizes are the same, but can't attest to that.
Mine seem to suspend about three gallons of water before any flushing occurs. This is so much better than multiple pots needing attention. Stems are a thing of the past, I have branches now. I've incorporated a silica nutrient into my regimen, so this is playing a part, but I still think the improved breathing of the root system is also a major factor.
I tried really hard to think of any cons, but seriously, there's none. My results and experiences with these containers has been nothing but positive. If there is anything to mention, I would only say that when you set your watering solution's ph, take into consideration the intake of air into the root system. My experience so far has shown that I need to set the solution at a 6.2 to achieve a 5.8 once it's gone through a moderately developed root system. When your plant is small, this isn't a big problem. However, as the root system grows and develops, you will need to take this into consideration. You would have the same issue in a regular container, but more so in this one. The outside air temperature, readily available oxygen, and ease of run-off are factors to consider when setting your nutrient solution ph. Also, and this is getting into minutia, I had to adjust the magnesium levels to correct an iron build-up. This was very slight, and I'm not sure if this container had anything to do with it. I don't have RO water to use, and that is always going to be a factor.
I've tested these in a real world scenario and seen the results. If you're looking for hydroponic 'purist' results in a soilless media, this is as good as it gets. You would have to go to a recirculating dwc system to get better results, and even then, I would put these to the challenge. Highly recommended.
Regardless, if you consider function to be superior to form these are the ticket...I plan on acquiring many more for my various experiments.
